Need help with hair styles & curling ! please help?

okay, so i have layered hair that is about an inch past my shoulders. ive never been able to sucsessfully curl my hair. i really want it to look like Lauren Conrads hair when she wares loose waves. how could i acheive this look, and is it even possible? thanks :)
